Swahili (kiSwahili) en Engels zijn de officiële landstalen. Het Swahili is een samenstelling van verschillende Bantoe-dialecten en het Arabisch dat ontstond langs de Oost-Afrikaanse kust en op het eiland Zanzibar. Swahili is de lingua franca van het land en vrijwel alle Tanzanianen spreken het. Sinds de onafhankelijkheid hebben de regering en andere nationale instellingen het gebruik van Swahili gestimuleerd door middel van literatuur, lokaal toneel en poëzie. Swahili wordt ook gebruikt als lesmedium in de eerste zeven jaar van het basisonderwijs. In het hoger onderwijs wordt Engels gebruikt en in overheidskantoren op grote schaal.
Naast Swahili spreken de meeste Afrikaanse Tanzanianen ook de traditionele taal van hun etnische groep. De belangrijkste talen van de Aziatische minderheden in Tanzania zijn Gujarati, Hindi, Punjabi en Urdu.

Swahili is the lingua franca of the country, and virtually all Tanzanians speak it. Since independence the government and other national institutions have promoted the use of Swahili through literature, local drama, and poetry. Swahili is also used as the medium of instruction in the first seven years of primary education. English is the medium of instruction at higher levels of education and is widely used in government offices.
In addition to Swahili, most African Tanzanians also speak the traditional language of their ethnic group. The main languages spoken by the Asian minorities in Tanzania are Gujarati, Hindi, Punjabi, and Urdu.
